Preppers are crazy

All emergencies share a common shared theme in regards to things needed to survive the emergency:

-EMERGENCY PLAN
-SHELTER
-WATER
-FOOD
-NEED FOR WARMTH (OR ABILITY TO STAY COOL IN HOT CLIMATES)
-SECURITY
-MEDICAL
-HYGIENE & SANITATION
The importance of each component varies dependent on climate (in a winter climate, shelter is at the top of the list; in a hot climate, water is at the top of the list).

All basic survival needs in a wilderness environment can be broken down into the 5 Cs:

Cutting (a knife)
Combustion (ability to make fire)
Container (something to transport water, boil water, or to cook food in)
Cordage (rope for building shelters, making snares/fishing, etc)
Cover (poncho or tarp at the very least for shelter and for staying dry)

These principals can be applied to any Emergency Scenario in which you find yourself without equipment. All scenarios should be broken down to your basic needs for survival. By breaking it down to simple, straight-forward tasks and needs, you will clearly see what has to be done and be able to accomplish it one by one.
